Does HIPAA Compliance Ensure my Security?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) originally became law 22 years ago in 1996. The original and sustained central requirement was to regulate access, portability and renewability of healthcare coverage.  In support of this central theme, Title II discussed specific procedures for maintaining privacy and security of personally identifiable health information (PHI).  Over the years this was supplemented by the Security Rule in 2003, the HITECH act in 2009 and the Final Omnibus Rule in 2013.

HIPAA compliance typically reinforces policy and procedure, focusing on attestation, but nothing technically prevents someone from viewing information they are not supposed to see. Security on the other hand enforces defense measures to prevent mishaps like this from happening. As healthcare continues to change and rely more on technology, we must address the differences between privacy and security, progressing to a more proactive and defensive approach to protecting patient’s electronic health records and properly controlling and providing access to secured data and devices. Although an organization can pass its HIPAA/HITECH audit 10 years in a row, they can still be problematic from a Cyber Security standpoint.

Join NetCraftsmen in a free, interactive webinar discussing the differences between HIPAA Compliance and Healthcare Security. During our one hour webinar, you will learn more about:

  • Why you can be HIPAA compliant, but still have gaping security holes.
  • How to leverage HIPAA to strengthen your security posture.
  • Creating a modern cyber defense strategy.
